Better Together! Maritz' United Way Campaign Success

November 21, 2016

Here at Maritz, we recently wrapped up our annual United Way campaign, and it was a major success. During the campaign, our people gave 100 percent, both with their monetary donations and their time by participating in Days of Caring projects.

With the campaign theme of “Better Together,” our people took to heart the mission to help provide for an organization that does so much for the St. Louis community and beyond. This year, we raised a grand total of $353,000, increasing our contributions by more than $12,000 from last year. Together, we raised this money through various activities including online pledging, car washes, Bring Your Dog to Work Day, an online auction and other fun activities.

While we had a great time raising funds for the United Way, we also volunteered our time and talents through the United Way Days of Caring projects. This year, more than 450 of our employees participated in 46 United Way Days of Caring projects. Teams volunteered at The Shade Tree, Kingdom House, St. Louis Crisis Nursery and many other United Way funded agencies.

One group of Maritz people participated in a project at Kingdom House, an organization that helps the economically disadvantaged achieve economic independence, self-sufficiency and a path out of poverty through holistic programs and services. Throughout the day the group assisted in various tasks and also got the chance to take a tour of the facility and learn about all the different services Kingdom House offers. This tour provided the group an opportunity to learn about their mission— “To help people achieve better lives. In fulfilling our mission, we teach people to fish, rather than just feeding them fish.”

Cathy Sansone, a Maritz employee who took part in this project at Kingdom House, was truly moved by the great work this organization is doing. “I learned so much about this wonderful organization that has been supporting the St. Louis community for 100+ years. The educational approach they are using to empower their clients to become self-sufficient is revolutionary,” said Cathy. “I was especially impressed with their financial services, which included a partnership with St. Louis Community Credit Union. This game-changing partnership allows the people they serve to have access to checking and savings accounts and loans at an affordable interest rate, which they would not have access to otherwise. They truly are helping people be better together.”

“These projects always promote team building while lending a hand to organizations that help us all become “Better Together.” And through our time, we experienced firsthand the impact the United Way agencies can have in helping people live their best lives,” said Debbie Schirmer, community affairs director at Maritz.

Altogether, the St. Louis community raised a record-breaking $75,055,451 in the 2016 campaign, which will enable to United Way to continue “mobilizing the community with one goal in mind – helping people live their best possible lives.”
