Maritz Leaders Kick Off United Way Campaign with Salvation Army Service Project

September 29, 2015

This week, we got a reminder about why we give to the United Way each year. As we kicked off our 2015 UW campaign, about 175 of us created toiletry kits for the The Salvation Army to hand out to local families when disaster strikes. In 30 minutes, we put together 400 personal care packages with soap, deodorant, wash cloths, toothbrushes and toothpaste. We also wrote inspirational notes to go with each package.

Tom Kovach, the associate director of corporate relations with the Salvation Army in St. Louis, joined us during the project. He described the reality of the recipients, many of whom will have nothing but the clothing on their backs when they receive their care package.

“The personal care items are vital, but the notes will give them hope, and that’s the most important thing you can give to a person in need,” he shared.

The Salvation Army is just one of more than 200 agencies funded by the United Way of Greater St. Louis, which helps one in three people in the St. Louis region learn, grow, aspire and live their best lives.

The Maritz 2015 United Way Campaign goes through the month of October and this year’s theme is “I Love STL.” As Maritz employees, we have a lot of opportunities to get involved in the campaign, including Days of Caring volunteer projects, fundraising events like kickball, washers, trivia night, and a 5k walk/run, and direct online donations. Throughout the campaign, in true Maritz fashion, there are prize giveaways to motivate our people to pledge their donations. So far this week, winners have received airline tickets, Bose headphones and Bose blue-tooth speakers, tablets, GoPro Hero camera and more.
