Giving Guidelines

Education is the focus of Maritz’s giving. In addition, we partner with national organizations such as United Way and Teach For America to direct resources to local communities, as well as Fair Saint Louis/Celebrate St. Louis, a community event that unites the greater St. Louis region in a joint effort to promote the downtown St. Louis revitalization.

With few exceptions, our giving is concentrated in the focus area of education. We invest in philanthropic initiatives and partnerships with organizations offering programs designed to educate.

Contribution Consideration:

  • We fund only organizations with an IRS exempt status under section 501(c)(3) that are fiscally sound with strong management practices and accountability.
  • Maritz supports 1) initiatives within the greater St. Louis area where the majority of our employees are located; 2) initiatives in other areas across the U.S. where Maritz has a substantial concentration of employees; 3) nationally-known non-profits.
  • Educational programming – it is important that grant applicants demonstrate the strategic link between their proposal and the giving focus of the Maritz community involvement program with measurable results.
  • Priority consideration will be given to educational programs that focus on STEM, literacy, the arts and conservation.
  • Generally, only one monetary donation will be given in a fiscal year to any organization.

Grants will be reviewed by a 12-member Maritz Corporate Giving Council and proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. Purpose/Alignment:  Grant aligns with Maritz’s Community Involvement Mission of empowering people to reach their full potential, i.e., develops participants’ strengths, knowledge and confidence, through educational endeavors.
  2. Organizational Capacity:  Organization provides clear mission/vision with sound financial management in place as demonstrated in supporting financial documentation, e.g., audited financial statements, 990, operating budget, etc.
  3. Employee Community Service (Volunteer) Opportunities:  Grant provides employee community service opportunities, e.g., general volunteer opportunities; opportunities for employees to develop professional and leadership skills through board/committee placements; opportunities to utilize specific skillsets of employees; opportunities to utilize Maritz business solutions and practices.
  4. Potential for Impact with Measurable Results: The program has a well-conceived outcome measurement plan and impact can be well documented.
  5. Brand Recognition:  Grant provides recognition/promotion opportunities to use the Maritz brand, e.g., social media, website recognition, printed materials, press releases, local and/or national media coverage (newspaper/radio/TV).

*Maritz recognizes that there is a broad range of organizations engaged in worthy activities, and we regret that due to budget constraints we are often unable to consider and/or fund every request, application, proposal or organization.  Because we receive funding requests that far exceed our annual giving program budget, Maritz reserves the right to decline applications and/or decrease requested grant amounts at its sole discretion.  Such a response does not reflect in any way a negative appraisal of the prospective organization or the value of its services.
