Maritz places in the "Circle of Excellence" for finishing with more than 100 points
ST. LOUIS (Dec. 7, 2010) – Maritz was recognized today with a Circle of Excellence award and Certificate of Achievement by the St. Louis Regional Chamber & Growth Association for its participation in the first St. Louis Green Business Challenge. The Challenge is part of the RCGA’s Climate Prosperity Project to help move St. Louis to a greenbelt economy that is home to green savings, green opportunities and green talent. The RCGA required Challenge participants to complete a scorecard of requirements, including forming green teams, reducing waste, conserving water and energy, improving indoor air quality, and providing clean transportation options.
Maritz was one of 58 local companies to complete the Challenge which began in February of this year. Participating companies completed the sustainability scorecard twice – once at the beginning of the competition and once at the end – to measure their improvements and achievements in the required areas. Each sustainability strategy is worth a specific number of points with innovative ideas earning extra points.
“RCGA member companies aggressively took up the Challenge and proved that these business strategies can provide ‘green savings,’ by helping grow their bottom lines through sustainable practices. This effort is one of our key initiatives to advance a green economy for our region,” said Richard C.D. Fleming, president and chief executive officer of the RCGA
Led by a grassroots effort, Maritz’ Green Team raised the company’s initial score from 65 points to 103, an increase of 26 percent, placing it in the Circle of Excellence for finishing with a score greater than 100. Less than a third of the participating companies earned a spot in the Circle of Excellence.
“Maritz is honored to receive this award from the RCGA,” said Beth Rusert, vice president of public relations abd corporate communications at Maritz. “A dedication to sustainability and ‘green thinking’ is vital for everyone and Maritz is excited to be a leader in these areas. I know the members of our Green Team are happy to see their efforts were recognized and will be eager to keep the momentum going.”
Maritz’ improvements include:
• implementing a full, single-stream recycling program on campus
• changing to reusable china and compostable ware in the campus cafés
• transforming a detention basin on campus into a natural wetlands area, including native Missouri plants and bird-nesting boxes
Maritz garnered bonus innovation points for utilizing undeveloped land by planting crops, harvesting hay, tub-grinding yard waste into compost and installing beehives.
According to Rusert, Maritz plans to continue its leadership in the realms of sustainability and corporate social responsibility, in hopes of improving its score in the 2011 St. Louis Green Business Challenge.
