A Leading Integrated Healthcare Delivery Network

Client Reduces Hiring Costs by Motivating Associates to Make Quality Referrals

Situation
This large integrated healthcare network was concerned about the high cost and diminishing quality of the new hires recruited through agencies. They believed that they could reduce costs and find more qualified candidates by encouraging their own associates to submit referrals. However, their cash-based referral program was not generating the participation levels they had hoped for.

Solution
Maritz recommended a broader offering of awards with a centralized award repository for tracking and budget control. By giving participants personal choice in how they could be rewarded, the referral plan would appeal to a larger number of associates. While cash awards would seem to be attractive, participants are more often motivated by the opportunity to “treat” themselves to something they might otherwise consider a luxury. The use of award points and the wide range of award choices resulted in an immediate increase in referral participants.

Results

  • As a result, the referral program was expanded to help reduce costs in the Network’s multiple award systems; referral, service, MVP and all discretionary awards
  • Maritz developed a state-of-the-art award management system which is now the award platform for all of the Client’s recognition programs
